Summary
Role of the groomer
“Hairdresser”
The groomer bathes, dries, combs and brushes the dogs and cats entrusted to him. He cuts their hair with scissors and clippers, according to breed standards or according to the owners’ requests.
Healer
In addition to the cuts, the groomer is also responsible for providing care to the dogs and cats in his care: clipping of the claws, cleaning of the eyes and ears, emptying of the anal glands…
Trader
The groomer is also in charge of managing his business:
- customer reception;
- selling products ;
- restocking;
- accounting…
Groomer working conditions
Employee or merchant
The groomer can be an employee of a pet shop (Zoomarket, Animalis, Truffaut, Jardiland, etc.) or be a merchant on his own account.
Physical work
The groomer is still standing. He works in a humid and warm environment where the baths and the drying of the animals are permanent. He is confronted with all types of animals, from the softest to the most rebellious and must show strength in certain cases.
How much does a groomer earn?
A novice groomer earns on average the minimum wage.
Training to become a groomer
No degrees
To set up as a groomer, no diploma is required. However, appropriate training guarantees the success of the professional project.
A professional certificate
8 Training Centers offer a 2-year apprenticeship leading to the Canine Groomer Certificate. It is the only title recognized by the State and by professionals.
Private school
Many private schools offer groomer training. They can be expensive and sometimes not very serious: it is important to be well informed beforehand. It is also prudent to check that the certificate or title given is recognized by the profession.
Some active professionals also offer training. Here too, it is necessary to find out about the quality of teaching.
Qualifications needed to be a groomer
More than animal love
Becoming a groomer because one enjoys contact with animals is insufficient: the work is demanding and tiring. You must be of good physical constitution and free of allergies.
Artist
Being skilled with your hands is essential. Gestures must be precise. The groomer can offer original cuts to the masters.
Connoisseur
A groomer must be familiar with dogs and cats, and in particular the different types of hair. He knows how to approach them and put them at ease. He masters the breed standards (which describe the type of cut to be made for show dogs).
