Summary
Role of a zoologist
In the field
The zoologist establishes the faunal inventories of a region or a place: he identifies the various animal species and classifies them in successive groups.
It also monitors animals in their ecosystem. It controls their rhythm of life, the conditions of nutrition and their behavior.
For his work, he must sometimes photograph them, film them and, if necessary, collect a few representative specimens to better observe them in the laboratory.
In a zoo, he monitors the living conditions of animals, bred in captivity or on probation, and takes care of them. It also organizes tours and information sessions for the public.
In laboratory
The zoologist carries out analyzes of specimens, living or dead. It determines the species, names them, lists them and classifies them. For this, he uses computerized devices such as microscopes and tissue or cell stainers.
He also experiments with new substances on animals to perform chemical and biological analyzes of new compounds for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
Finally, he can follow projects for the protection of a species or an animal community on behalf of private or governmental institutions responsible for the protection of animals and the environment.
In general, he specializes in a group of animals or in a theme such as reproductive biology or population dynamics.
To note : Depending on their status and the organization they work for, zoologists may be called upon to teach in a secondary school or a university. Few jobs are available in parks and nature reserves.
How to become a zoologist?
The profession of zoologist requires a solid level of training, most often acquired via a 3rd cycle at university. There are 2 possible paths.
University course
A course in life sciences or in sciences and technologies mentioning sciences of the universe (1st and 2nd cycle) makes it possible to then consider a research or professional Master’s degree, then a thesis.
Engineer training
A school of agronomy or a veterinary school is a solid foundation. To be completed with a 3rd cycle. The title of engineer facilitates integration into the job market.
Continuing education
It takes the most diverse forms: seminars, congresses, refresher courses, group work, case studies, internships, etc.
How much does a zoologist earn?
Remuneration varies according to the position and according to the organization. If you opt for a university position as a lecturer, salaries vary widely and can exceed €40,000 per year.
An entry-level research position at INRA is valued at around €26,000 per year.
What are the prospects for the future?
Job openings remain quite rare and public research only allocates a few positions per year to 3rd cycle graduates.
Prospects seem better in secondary and university education.
To note : the environmental sector increasingly grants a place to these professionals.
