Summary
Role of the surgeon
Prior consultation
The surgeon accompanies the patient before the surgery.
First, he receives the person concerned in his office, explains the procedures and answers his questions, with a view to establishing an essential climate of trust. He analyzes medical records, history, possible allergies…
Only then does he choose the best method and prepare the intervention.
Surgical intervention
Once this preparatory work is completed, the surgeon and the patient set an operation date.
The surgeon then performs the operation, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
Postoperative follow-up
The surgeon continues to accompany the patient after his operation. He provides follow-up throughout the recovery period following the operation, then periodically if necessary.
Surgeon working conditions
Often in the operating room
The surgeon usually works in a hospital or clinic. But he can also consult in his own office, in a private care establishment, within an association, a research organization or a public establishment.
In all cases, the surgeon spends most of his time in the operating room. This is where all the interventions are carried out, which can last several hours.
A relational dimension not to be overlooked
The surgeon is not only the conductor of the operating rooms. The relationships he maintains with his patients are also essential.
He must know how to express himself as well as listen. He must find the right words, be frank but cautious, show tact and pedagogy.
How much does a surgeon earn?
According to the combined income of the hospital and the university, it is estimated that a surgeon earns between €5,700 and €10,500 gross per month.
Depending on his status, bonuses and allowances may be added.
Training to become a surgeon
After a Bac S, you have to move towards medical studies to become a surgeon.
Once the competition for the first year has been passed, the student follows the 6 common years sanctioned by a national exam.
Students then choose their specialty based on their ranking on this exam. They then become interns, in a specialty, for a minimum of 5 years. In total: the apprentice doctor must engage in 11 years of studylong and difficult.
To note : the European School of Surgery, located in Paris, also trains surgeons.
Qualifications needed to be a surgeon
top scientist
It is the surgeon who defines the modes of operation that he wants to use. His long studies allow him to know the human body to perfection.
But the surgeon is also a technical expert. His operating gestures require a great deal of skill, precision and composure.
Thoroughness must be one of its main assets!
Wearing
The operations can sometimes last long hours, and be particularly stressful.
The surgeon must therefore be in good shape, both physically and mentally.
Reagent
He must be able to make decisions quickly, and communicate them to the team of specialists around him: anesthesiologists, operating room nurses, resuscitators, etc.
Reassuring
Outside the operating room, the surgeon also has privileged contact with his patients. He must put them in confidence, so that the surgical intervention is carried out in the best conditions.
After the operation, he also follows, on a case-by-case basis, their evolution.
