What are his working conditions?
Life at the barracks
The non-commissioned member must live in the barracks during his 4 months of training. Thereafter, he can stay in town if he wishes.
He is hired for periods of 3 or 5 years, during which he does not move, unless he changes specialty or obtains a higher grade.
Abroad
Non-commissioned members may be called for external operations. They live in barracks in sensitive areas of the countries concerned. Their missions last 4 to 6 months.
In continuous training
Whatever his trade, the soldier must train regularly to keep himself in good physical condition. He is also constantly trained in his profession and in new techniques and skills.
How much does a soldier earn?
A volunteer in the Army earns approximately €1,200 net monthly, food and accommodation.
How to become a soldier?
Terms
- be of French nationality and enjoy their civil rights;
- be over 17.5 and under 29 (Army and Navy);
- be over 17 and under 25 (Air Force);
- hold a CAP, a BEP, a baccalaureate…
- be in good standing with respect to the obligations of the Defense Preparation Call Day (JAPD) or National Service;
- pass the selection tests and be declared medically and physically fit for enlistment;
- know how to swim (Navy).
Maintenance
Recruitment begins with an interview at an Armed Forces Recruitment and Information Center. It is mandatory to provide the identity card and the JAPD certificate.
Then, a selection takes place over 2.5 days with tests (medical check-up, sports tests, psychotechnical tests, individual interview).
Training
After incorporation, the voluntary worker follows an initial general training of 4 to 6 months, followed by a specialization.
How long?
After a first contract of 3 or 5 years, it is possible, under certain conditions, to renew the commitment by successive contracts and this up to 11, 15, or even 25 years of service.
What are the required qualities ?
Discipline and Courage
A soldier must have a keen sense of hierarchy and discipline. He must, moreover, be courageous and ready to put his life in danger during the execution of a mission.
Physical condition
The soldier must be athletic and in excellent physical condition.
