Role of the psychoanalyst
Listen and interpret
The psychoanalyst listens to and analyzes the discourse of his patient to understand his progress. This analytical work is based on the patient’s personal history, memories and emotions. Dream interpretation can also provide food for thought.
The psychoanalyst must tame the silences and, when the time comes, give the appropriate interpretation to guide the patient towards the path of healing. Finally, the practitioner defines the objectives and means of the treatment.
To note : unlike the psychiatrist, the psychoanalyst does not have the right to dispense medication.
Dual activity
The psychoanalyst usually works in private practice. However, many psychoanalysts carry out a mixed activity and practice as much in liberal as in institution. They can be employees or contractors in certain structures:
- medical-psycho-educational centers (CMPP);
- Education and Special Education Section (SEES).
How to become a psychoanalyst?
No regulations in force
The profession of psychoanalyst is neither recognized nor regulated. There is, however, an International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) to which many practitioners are affiliated. Other currents of thought also exist.
Carry out a personal analysis
The psychoanalyst must himself have carried out a personal analysis in order to understand the mechanisms of his own unconscious. The beginner is supervised by another analyst, or even a group of analysts.
At the same time, he must complete his training by carrying out research work in collaboration with colleagues.
How much does a psychoanalyst earn?
When practicing in private practice, the fees of a psychoanalyst are free. Rates generally start at 60 € per session and can increase with the notoriety of the practitioner.
The average annual income is between 15,000 and 30,000 € net, but can go up to more than 60,000 €.
Qualifications needed to be a psychoanalyst

The psychoanalyst must also have a broad culture of human sciences, philosophy, history, literature… and of course a perfect knowledge of mental mechanisms.
