Summary
What is the job of docker?
When a boat arrives, the docker must load and/or unload the holds as quickly as possible.
While the use of carrying gear is increasingly common, the job remains very physical. It can be risky due to the proximity of the sea, the sequence of operations and the transport of heavy loads.
What are the qualities of a docker?
Punctuality and physical stamina
The docker is one of the most important links in a cargo port. He must be physically resistant, but also demonstrate punctuality and speed. Indeed, some containers contain perishable goods or obey time constraints.
Availability and security
Compliance with instructions is essential to ensure the safety of personnel and goods.
Availability is essential: demand for loading and unloading takes place at any time of the day or night.
Note: the job of docker is dominated by men because of the physical strength required.
Dockworker salary
Daily pay…
The salary of a docker is very variable. It is always paid by the day, around 90 €, even if it is monthly.
In general, a docker can earn between €3,000 and €4,000 gross monthly.
… and yet variable
His income varies according to the employer and the place of work. The size of the ports, the volume of goods as well as the economic situation affect the possibilities of work and therefore wages.
A docker can become a team leader or a hangar manager, for example.
Note: the use of the container for groups has reduced the number of dockers needed in the ports. The number of dockers was divided by 4 between 1982 and 2002. Nevertheless, we note that hiring is picking up in the ports.
Become a docker
No prerequisite required
No educational level is required to become a docker. On the other hand, the certificate of aptitude for the safe driving of forklifts (CACES) is required.
A profession that is becoming more professional
Since the 1992 reform, the level of training is higher.
Port handling training centers generally train candidates in the use of lifting and transshipment equipment.
There are also professional qualification certificates in port handling (port operation sector). These certificates are prepared in handling companies.
Perspectives of evolution
Due to the modernization of the trade and increasingly sophisticated equipment, the need for labor has been considerably reduced. The competition has become severe.
A well-trained and experienced docker can progress to positions of responsibility, managing a team or managing a hangar.
