Use Slack wisely
One of the ways to stay identifiable even when working remotely is to be active on Slack or any other instant messenger. Active but not hyper active, to the point of spending your days there for everything and especially not saying anything. So subscribe to the channels that seem relevant to you. And above all, unsubscribe from those who, in the end, are of no use to you. If not to waste time. Activate notifications for the channels (channels, etc.) that seem essential to you. Participate by replying and suggesting ideas, links and contacts. “But above all, note the names of the participants who seem important to you and contact them directly”, recommends Ana Fernandez, director of the firm Energycoaching. An example ? Congratulate a newcomer on his appointment and offer him a live chat, only if he can have a direct (or indirect) impact on your future projects. On the “recruitment” channel, activate yourself to take part in the process. “You will also be spotted by the HRD. Two birds with one stone,” she added.
Make your results speak
In video or on Slack, display your results, celebrate progress and success on a project. The idea is to show that even in telework, you continue to perform, innovate, succeed… “After a video or a telephone exchange with your boss or others, write and distribute a report. This will give even more visibility to your skills,” advises Ana Fernandez.
Be flexible on telework days
“If you have the possibility, do not take fixed days of teleworking so that we do not get used to your absence on such and such a day at the office. Instead, go to the site on the same day(s) as your N+1. Synchronize your calendar with important meeting days. For example the days of Comex. Even if you’re not invited, that’s when you can meet and exchange with your N + 2, “said Ana Fernandez. The shared diary indicates the arrival of a branch manager on such and such a date, a retirement party…? Try to align your “face-to-face” days with these events. This will be an opportunity to meet colleagues, managers, bosses important to you.
Alternate written and oral
In telework, many exchanges take place in writing. By email, instant messaging and co. As soon as thought, as soon as written. Except that sometimes, the writings exceed the thoughts. And an info or a message that was intended to be sympathetic, will be perceived as arrogant, painful, even aggressive. “A tense communication can lead to certain people being sidelined,” observes Jean-Daniel Guyot, co-founder and president of Memo Bank. As well on the side of the senders of the message who, feeling misunderstood, will tend to withdraw into themselves. That on the side of the receivers, who to avoid scuds to come, will prefer to address other members of the box. In short, in all cases, there is a risk of isolation in doing everything remotely in writing. So give preference to the oral in order to be able to “coat” and nuance your remarks as you wish. “One of my clients has completely eliminated the use of emails several times a month so that his employees can (re)talk to each other”, observes Philippe Emont, associate director of AlterNego. Without going that far because sometimes you have to leave traces, calibrate your written statements.
