Older employees consider themselves to be in great shape
And if we stopped associating the term seniors with elderly people, too old to work, broke everywhere or technophobes… This is essentially what the few claim (and demand) 10,000 employees aged 45 to 59 interviewed about their second part of their career by a transformation consulting firm.
According to the AlterNego* study, employees who are starting their second part of their career are in good shape since only 17% indicate that they have “less energy than before in their work”, 19% to be less focused and 24% to make their work a lower priority than before. At the same time, 40% say they have fewer personal constraints.
And these figures are even lower among managers.
The seniors seem to be in good shape. And not as scared as we mean digitalization of tools and communicationor the hybrid work. Better they claim loud and clear that they are motivated and committedand clearly express their desire to continue to work, progress and train
Except that opposite, we have entangled employers “in an ageism that gives pride of place to youth, and which reinforces negative stereotypes towards the most senior” in the words of Patrick Scharnitzky, doctor in social psychology, associate director of the firm AlterNego and author of the study. So obviously, the ambitions of each other do not match. And the employment rate for seniors is not taking off.

Senior employees always ready to pass the torch
All age categories combined, nearly 90% of respondents say they would like convey what they know about their work and their business. For this, seniors are largely up for it (75%) to do skills sponsorship but also and above all to ensure the role of tutor with new recruits.
This transmission of skills is even more important to managers (80%). And contrary to what employers may think, the older seniors get, the lower their expectations in terms of job layout and working time.
Not sure that the new law on pensions providing for a relaxation of gradual retirement will make so many emulators.
AlterNego survey conducted online from January 15 to February 15, 2023 among 10,205 employees aged 45 and over in employment. Non-managers: 66%. Managers: 34%. Men: 54%. Women: 46%.
