Step 1
First check if your activity is compatible with working from home (you can be an employee or not):
- tertiary activities (administrative, writer, translator, secretary, etc.);
- personal services;
- certain animal services;
- consulting (in communication, IT, business management, etc.);
- artistic activities (author, illustrator, etc.);
- the field of education and teaching (maternal assistant, etc.).
2nd step
If you are an employee, you must agree with your employer to work from home. This is an increasingly common situation but which sometimes meets with resistance from companies.
Highlight your availability. Prove that working from home will not make you lose responsiveness to your employees. You can also offer to split your time between the business premises and your home.
step 3
If you are independent, you need to create and maintain a network. Many of the assignments offered are not published: companies have a pool of freelance workers whom they call on when needed. It’s up to you to make yourself known to be part of it!
step 4
Make sure you have all the tools you need to fully perform your duties:
- a phone ;
- a computer with an internet connection (essential for working from home on the internet);
- a fax;
- the specific equipment provided by your client/employer for manual work at home, for example (jewelry assembly, etc.).
NB : some of these items may be covered by your company if you are an employee.
step 5
Stay available: working from home does not mean being alone all the time. You must be available for your clients or meetings within your company.
step 6
If you are self-employed, develop new skills: you must take charge of your business in its administrative aspects (accounting, communication, etc.). You will spend time managing your activity in addition to actual tasks.
