What is the role of a medical secretary?

A medical secretary works within a medical structure and represents the doctor’s right arm. Her job is to welcome patients and reassure them. She also takes care of administrative tasks (managing telephone calls and scheduling doctor’s appointments, writing reports, etc.). A medical secretary therefore occupies an important place within the structure for which she works. It is essential for all doctors.

In the hospital public service, the salary of a medical secretary at the start is around €1,220 per month. The salary depends on your rank and step. To this main remuneration, which increases with seniority, are added various allowances and bonuses, paid for example according to your place of practice.

In the private sector, a medical secretary can expect a higher salary. The gross monthly salary of a junior medical secretary there is around €1,500.

But this obviously evolves with the career.

Opportunities

A medical secretary can exercise her profession in the public as well as in the private sector. She can work in different medical structures such as hospitals, medical offices, clinics, medical analysis laboratories but also in retirement homes.

What are his working conditions?

Working hours vary depending on the medical structure where you are employed. You may work weekends or nights.

What training to become a medical secretary?

Among other training, it is possible to obtain the certificate of professional qualification of medical secretary

In recognition of its professionalism, the Culture et Formation organization obtained the ISQ OPQF label in March 2010. It is the first distance learning organization to be ISQ/OPQF certified.

Access conditions

To access the training, you must be 16 years old and have the college certificate level.

Training through this is done remotely. Its duration is one year but you can extend it up to 36 months and even reduce it.

Two training methods are available to you to become a medical secretary:

  • correspondence training (you receive the courses at your home);
  • e-learning training (you study on the internet).

If you want to broaden your skills, Culture and Training offers two specializations:

  • dental secretary;
  • pharmaceutical secretary.

Culture and Training is also two preparations:

  • preparation for the ST2S baccalaureate;
  • preparation for the medical secretary competition for the Hospital Public Service.

What qualities are needed?

To become a medical secretary, you must of course have good interpersonal skills, but also have good listening skills, be organized and rigorous. Availability, friendliness and discretion are highly valued in this job. In addition to all this, mastery of spelling and computer tools is essential as well as mastery of medical terminology.
