Braids also for Air France stewards

This is a case that has been dragging on since… 2012. Dismissed because he wore braids during his working hours, a steward from the Air France company had to appeal to the Court, arguing that he had been the victim of discrimination. Paying battle since the high court recognized in a judgment of November 23 that “the difference in treatment which consists in authorizing women to wear African braids tied in a bun but prohibiting it to men is solely based on the sex of the employee : it is not justified by any essential and determining requirement specific to the exercise of the profession of steward”.

Rising salary packages, golden benefits… how luxury is adapting to recruit

Even if the work “Towards real equality between women and men”, published by the ministry in charge of this theme, takes up data that is sometimes a little dated, it has the merit of asking the table of gender inequalities at work. Salary, part-time, mix of professions… all these key figures can help to argue during negotiations with your employer… but also during exchanges between friends.

Engineers still struggling but progress too

Two possible readings of the figures of the Observatory of Women Engineers 2023 published by the association Women Engineers and based on the annual study of IESF, of which Women Engineers is a member.

👎 Either we see the glass half empty:

  • 24% female engineers and 30% female engineers. A figure that has not changed for 10 years.
  • An 18% gap between the salaries of female engineers and their male counterparts. To the detriment of women of course. In 2021, they paid on average at 50,100 euros compared to 58,900 euros for men.
  • Lesser responsibilities. 42% of female engineers have no responsibility (compared to 33% of male engineers), all forms of responsibility combined (hierarchical, budgetary or financial results-related responsibilities).
  • Twice as many fixed-term contracts among engineers. There is a gap of nearly 8 points at the level of permanent contracts to the disadvantage of female engineers.

👍 Either we see the glass half full:

  • Wage differentials are slowly narrowing. We went from -21% to -18% in 2 years.
  • Less stereotypical engineering positions than before. Where their elders were previously confined mostly to the fields of management, administration and direction, women engineers now opt more for studies, research, production, technical advice and logistics.

Recruitment: for senior women, it’s a double penalty

According to the Robert Half study entitled “What candidates want in 2023”, 63% of 45-55 year olds have not been contacted by recruiters at all in the last six months and 19% have been rarely. But in addition, the study reveals that discrimination against seniors is gendered: lSenior women (68%) are even less contacted for a job than men (56%).

Senior women: advice to relaunch your career

In his work Re-starting life after 50 years. Because the ambition of women has no age (Dunod), Frédérique Cintrat shares her experience and interviews women who have decided to “restart” their lives. They created their business, passed a coveted exam, obtained a promotion, took over a company or even left entrepreneurship to become employees again… We are inspired.

Slices of life of retired women

In the article “Inequalities in retirement: 64 years in the life of a woman” by Marie Charrel, published in The world, we discover stories of retired women. Chopped, hampered careers, minimum pensions… slices of life that explain why women’s retirement pensions are 28% lower than those of men. Reversion pension included.

Women entrepreneurs are more resistant to the crisis

The quit rate for women increased from 2.9% to 3.6% over the two-year pandemic period, in contrast to the higher rate for men (3.5% to 4.4 %) according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Report.

Paying wages is more for third parties

Since December 27, the labor code has (finally) specified that it is no longer possible to pay an employee’s salary into an account belonging to a third party. No, you’re not dreaming. This measure was designed to “fight against economic dependence and violence within the couple”. When the salary is paid by bank transfer, it must be paid into a bank or postal account of which the employee concerned is the holder or co-holder.

Nursery positions to be filled for men

9,000 positions to be filled per year which do not find all takers and only 3% of men to take care of children. Faced with this observation, the government will launch a mixed communication campaign (for women and men) in order to encourage vocations.
