Role of the teacher
Transmit knowledge:
The main mission of the teacher: to instruct the students, to make them acquire the knowledge and the know-how in his discipline which is of nature:

Participate in the educational project:
In connection with the other teachers, but also with the principal educational adviser and the principal, the teacher is involved in the life of the college or high school. He participates in meetings, class councils, and he meets the parents of pupils.

How much does a teacher earn?
The teacher is official.
He earns nearly €1,500 at the start of his career, and up to around €3,000 net on average after 30 years of practice.
Teacher working conditions
In a secondary school:
The teacher works in a middle School or in a high school. It inculcates a specific subject to different classes, of several levels.
In class :
In college or high school, the teacher teaches about 18 hours (20 hours for artistic disciplines) per week.
He also often plays, for one of them, the role of head teacher. For this group of students, it is he who coordinates the class councils and manages any specific discipline problems.
Must provide personal work:
In addition to his class schedules, the teacher must update his lessons, correct exercises or copies, prepare assessments. There is also a personal work of research and news tracking.
Training to become a teacher
Selective stream:
A teacher must hold the Certificate of aptitude for secondary education teaching (Capes) to teach in college or high school. Since 2010, only students with a master 2 have the opportunity to register for the competition.
1st status: trainee
From the first year of Master, students can take observation and accompanied practice courses. Then, in the second year of the master’s degree, students complete internships at responsibility in classes.

Special status in private education:
If a candidate goes to a college or a private high school under contract, he must pass the Cafep (Certificate of aptitude for teaching functions in private 2nd degree establishments).

Qualities needed to be a teacher
To be a teacher:
The teacher must feel invested. He also needs patience and a certain ease with teenagers. He must also be comfortable orally and communicate his discipline with passion in order to attract the attention of young people, who are sometimes dreamy or absent.
Knowing how to be authoritative:
Depending on the classes, establishments and years, the teaching conditions differ. Sometimes these disparities have to be managed. Just as it is necessary to maintain order in the classrooms. The teacher is therefore accessible and open, while remaining firm.
